Certainly not the sort of thing you'd want to do any serious work with, or for any length of time, or very often. Portable is ok, though.

Since microprocessors have become ubiquitous in nearly all things electronic, the market has been flooded with some very fine 'scopes up to 100Mhz for very little money, because they're just not fast enough for even rudimentary troubleshooting.

You'll regularly see $3,000 to $5,000 units going for $50 to $100. These are great for audio work, where signal frequencies are glacially slow relative to what you'll see in micro-based widgetry. The other nice thing is good 'scopes aren't usually entrusted to dingbats, so they're generally in very good condition. A 10-20 year old unit will often look and perform like new. My only caveat with used 'scopes is to stay away from the 'storage' models. The CRTs in those things have surprisingly short lifespans, and are very expensive to replace.

Fortunately, you rarely need that feature in audio work anyway, so it's easy to live without. Also, watch out for probes. You want at least one 10x probe, preferably two. If the 'scope doesn't come with them, they're surprisingly expensive. I paid nearly as much for the probe I had to buy as I did for the 'scope after the 'scope I bought didn't come with any.
