FARAI CHIDEYA, host: Howard Hewett split from Akron, Ohio in the 1970s. Like a lot of young men, he wanted to be a star, so he headed for Los Angeles. Hewett danced on the hit TV show 'Soul Train.' He later joined Jody Watley and the trio Shalamar. Hewett co-wrote a string of hits for the group, including 'This is for the Lover in You,' 'Second Time Around,' and 'Make That Move.'

CHIDEYA: And of course he got to wear some wonderfully funky outfits. Anyway, Hewett wrote and sang with artists like La Toya Jackson, George Duke and Stacy Lattisaw.

CHIDEYA: Since then, Howard Hewett has released eight more albums, including an inspirational disc. His new CD, 'If Only,' comes out on Tuesday. Hewett sat down with NPR's Tony Cox in our L.A.-area studios.

TONY COX: Shalamar. HEWETT: Yeah. COX: That was the beginning. HEWETT: It was the beginning of recording. You know, I mean I've been singing since I was 10 years old. My mom was a professional gospel promoter.

And so, you know, she literally, like, kicked me out on stage the first time, you know, when I was, like, 10, 11 years old. And that's when I started. That's when I started out. COX: I want you to tell us the story - this is a great story, from what I've read - about how you were at a club and you were discovered by Ralph Johnson. (Soundbite of laughter) COX: Now, Ralph Johnson was with Earth, Wind & Fire at the time. HEWETT: Yeah, he's still with them COX: And you were at the club and you were dancing. HEWETT: Mm-hmm.
